Roulette in films
Many films have featured certain big name casinos, such as the likes of those situated on the famous Vegas strip. Take Ocean’s 11 for example, this was so successful they even made a follow-up movie.
The buzz and the excitement of a casino can create an intense backdrop for a film, which is probably why it is used to regularly.
Russian roulette is another type of roulette that is often featured in films and is usually seen in your average gangster movie.
Russian roulette was in fact made famous world wide with the movie The Deer Hunter, which was released in 1978. The movie itself evolves around three soldiers who are taken prisoners during the Vietnam War. They were then forced to play a deadly game of Russian roulette as their captors gambled on the results. This is a very dangerous game and the game is played out until there is only one remaining competitor.
This particular film was thought to have inspired gangs of youths and therefore wasn’t very popular!
Other films that have involved the game of a deadly Russian roulette tournament include the likes of Numb3rs, ‘7 Men Out’. Various TV series also seemed to follow suit just after the above films went live.
Video games have also taken on board roulette and the 2010 independent video game by Peter Lu acts out a Russian roulette game with an imaginary opponent.
Another game entitled ‘Conflict’ uses a similar technique in the edition ‘Conflict, Vietnam’. Captured soldiers are once again forced to participate in the vicious game just as in the above film the Deer Hunter.
More recently other video games have followed suit, thinking they are adding certain anticipation to their viewer’s experience. They certainly wouldn’t recommend taking it any further than the screen however!
